I interviewed several 25-30 year old individuals living in Brooklyn, NY who travel to a new destination at least once per year. Based on the interviews, I created the user persona for Sam.
USER JOURNEY
I created a user journey for Sam, where she is planning a 10-day trip to Japan with her two best friends, and their goal is to have a mix of sightseeing, adventure, and relaxation. Based on her user journey for planning a trip, I was able to understand her pain points and identify opportunities within each of the different phases.
TEMPERATURE CHECK
In order to gauge the interest and viability of my ideas, I conducted two polls on Instagram. Based on the temperature checks, I decided to pursue an application focused on itinerary planning and sharing.
COMPETITIVE AUDIT
Taking a look at direct competitors, there is a gap in the market for a travel application that is personalized and has a large community. I researched indirect competitors in this space that can inform key features.
I conducted competitive audits of the direct and indirect competitors for two different processes: travel research and creating an itinerary. This helped me to evaluate the different existing applications and identify key features to include in my app design.

USER FLOW 1 - JOINING A GROUP
A key feature of this TravelMate is being able to find and join groups that pertain to your travel interests and have the opportunity to connect with and share experiences with individuals around the world.
USER FLOW 2 - FRIEND TRAVEL MAP
Another unique feature is being able to share your future travel plans and view your friends’ travel plans so that you can plan meet ups or even join an existing trip. This encourages users to connect over a shared love of traveling.
